I had an old wicker-seat rocking chair in which I rocked my two sons as infants. The seat had cracked and was unusable. I decided to cut it out to form the nest portion of this piece, which I was moved to make this year as my youngest graduated college and chose to live out West, leaving his parents empty nesters.

I filled an old bird cage with twigs, sticks, bright objects and pieces of shiny jewelry, including a diamond ring that hangs in the middle of the cage. Sometimes I feel like a magpie, squirreling away irresistible objects.
